Question Two

2.  Describe your liturgical style and practice. If your community provides more than one type of worship service, please describe all.

“Liturgy and worship” are routinely among the top answers as to what people love about St Peter’s.  We offer several different worship services that garner praise.

The liturgical style for the principal Sunday morning service could be described as “broad with a nod toward high.” Specifically, we typically follow Rite II Holy Eucharist, saying most of the service, chanting the psalm, the Great Thanksgiving, and the Lord’s Prayer, and ringing sanctus bells.  We use incense only on High Holy Days and at special services. The principal Sunday service is particularly noted for its inspiring music.  The choir leads the congregation in hymns and offers anthems and sung settings of canticles and other pieces.

The early Sunday morning service is a quiet, reflective Holy Eucharist, said rather than chanted, with a few hymns supported by the organ. This service follows Rite I.

We also currently offer an afternoon worship service on Sundays, rotating styles of worship between full choral Evensong, said Eucharist, and Taize.

Each weekday there is a Holy Eucharist during the lunch hour, following Rite II in a said service with no music. Located among office towers, museums and restaurants, worship here at this time often draws visitors beyond our parishioners.

An Evensong choir comprised of musicians from churches throughout Charlotte leads special Evensong services to mark All Saints, Epiphany, and other Feast days and observances. See our Music and Worship website for more details.
