Our season begins before school starts with week-long choir camps for the town and touring choirs. Four camps run concurrently: Boys Touring, Boys Town, Girls Touring and Girls Town. The MasterSingers begin their season with a weekend retreat to the mountains.

During these camps, the choristers:

  • Refresh and learn rehearsal skills.
  • Refine and learn sight-singing/solfege skills.
  • Begin working on new repertoire.
  • Re-establish friendships and make new ones.
  • Enjoy team building activities and sports! In past years, these activities have included swimming, bowling, solving “The Amazing Maize Maze” and competing in a Polaroid scavenger hunt!
  • Eat meals together, learning and practicing appropriate table etiquette. These skills are put to use in the future, as we travel.
  • Improve music reading skills through handbell classes.
  • Perform at a concluding service and concert.

The camp experience is essential to every young singer’s success. It sets the chorister up with reminders of his or her knowledge base and creates a healthy and supportive environment for them to challenge themselves in front of their peers who, after camp, have become their friends. And it’s fun, too!

The MasterSingers have a weekend away at the Valle Crucis Conference Center outside of Boone, NC in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. During the retreat, the teens also:

  • Refresh rehearsal skills.
  • Refresh sight-singing/solfege skills.
  • Begin working on new repertoire.
  • Re-establish friendships and make new ones.
  • Enjoy a Saturday afternoon group building activity such as a ropes course and a Saturday evening social activity.
  • Eat and live together in a dorm setting.
  • Lead a concluding Sunday morning worship service.

This retreat experience is also essential to each singer’s success, reviewing their musical knowledge while learning new repertoire and building a cohesive group to work together toward common goals throughout the year. Friendships that last a lifetime are begun at camp.
